THE ICONIC Tweed Valley Banana Festival will make its long-awaited return tomorrow (Friday, August 24) and Saturday, August 25, with residents and organisers eager to relaunch one of the longest running regional festivals in Australia.
The festival is expected to go ahead despite the forecast for much-needed rain on Friday afternoon and Saturday with organisers saying “we’re going to be dancing in the rain”.
“We should however note that if there is a downpour, we may need to delay or cancel the event if safety becomes an issue,” Apex organisers said.
Apex Club of Murwillumbah members have been busy putting the final touches on the event which will feature a Gala Dinner at the Murwillumbah Services Club on Saturday, August 18.
Among the big events planned for this year is the Friday Night Down the Street event on Friday, August 24, followed by the street parade and main day on Saturday, August 25.
Tweed Valley Banana Festival coordinator Carol Mudge said the event’s full return this year will mark a new era for the festival with Apex Club of Murwillumbah at the helm.
“We are so excited to bring the iconic Banana Festival back to the Tweed Valley,” Ms Mudge said.
“We’d like to invite the entire Tweed Shire to come and join in the family fun throughout the weekend and to bring their friends and family from outside the shire.”
Ms Mudge said the 2018 festival was hoped to set a standard for the event for years to come.
“This is the first year we have the full complement of activities back for the community to enjoy as the festival had done for decades in the past,” she said.
Carol said there would be plenty of surprises for the street parade.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” she said.
“There’ll be some new floats and old combining to make it a great parade and event.
“We just hope to see the town packed with locals and visitors enjoying our unique local businesses and loving the Tweed.”
