Plenty of fun at The Regent Cinema

The Regent Theatre, in conjunction with Friends of the Regent Cinema, will celebrate the Murwillumbah Arts Trail with an afternoon of jazz on the balcony, on Saturday, May 18.

The informal gig by the jazz duo Highly Strung, headed by Phil Eizenberg on guitar and vocals, and Karen Lee on violin and vocals, will commence at 4pm, for a gold coin donation.

The event will complement the other cultural and community events taking place throughout Murwillumbah from May 16 to 19 and will add a welcome distraction at the end of a grueling federal election campaign.

The Regent and Friends Association will follow up with another dress-up event on Thursday, May 23, for the opening of the film The Chaperone, set in 1920s America.

Starring Miranda Otto, Elizabeth McGovern and Haley Lu Richardson, the film follows the story of a Kansas woman whose life is forever changed when she accompanies a young Louise Brooks to New York City to study at the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts.

Louise Brooks would go on to become an actress and dancer, and flapper icon who popularised the bob hairstyle, synonymous with the flapper syle.

Guests are encouraged to dress in their best black and white with prizes for the best-dressed woman (a voucher from Bon Bons hair salon) and man (a bottle of wine).

In the best flapper tradition, there will be no hint of gender stereotyping in the selection of these prizes.

The event kicks off with snacks on the balcony at 6pm, followed by announcement of best-dressed at 6.30pm and the screening beginning at 7pm.

Admission is $10 and can be purchased at the cinema.
