M1 crash involving truck and limo

AN ACCIDENT involving a truck and a limousine on the M1 at Tweed Heads South this afternoon has caused traffic chaos with the northbound lanes closed for several hours.

At approximately 2.30pm (DST) emergency services were called to the accident in the northbound lane just after the Minjungbal Drive exit.

It is believed the limousine crashed into the back of the truck after failing to stop at a roadworks zone.

The driver was freed from the wreckage and has been taken to the Gold Coast University hospital by ambulance, the extent of the driver’s injuries are currently unknown. The truck driver was not injured.

The M1 backed up in both directions for several kilometres as well as along Leisure Drive, Kirkwood Drive and Minjungbal Drive as motorists attempted to avoid the area. Motorists reported the trip home taking over an hour.

The M1 is now open to traffic in both directions.
