OVER ONE hundred locals, dignitaries, entertainers and Council staff gathered last Tuesday August 16 at the Tumbulgum Tavern to launch Tumbulgum Celebrates 150 Years, the main event of Tweed Shire Council’s 2016 Tweed River Festival to be held Saturday November 12.
Situated at the “meeting place of waters”, the confluence of the Rous (North Arm) and Tweed Rivers, the picturesque village of Tumbulgum makes an ideal setting for the Tweed River Festival, with Wollumbin Mt Warning a fitting backdrop. This year’s festival theme is Join Us at The Junction, commemorating the original settlement of Tweed Junction established 1866.:
Jane Lofthouse, Unit Coordinator Community and Natural Resources said, “When Council was approached by the Tumbulgum community to bring the River Festival to Tumbulgum in 2016 to highlight the 150 Years Celebrations I didn’t have to think too hard about it.”
“The Tweed and Rous Rivers are an integral part of life in Tumbulgum and our rivers are a significant resource for the Tweed Valley”.
The River Festival includes a week of activities highlighting the environment and community and culminates with the main event in Tumbulgum, featuring family friendly entertainment, workshops, food, historical display and the popular Lantern Parade on Saturday, November 12.
Tumbulgum Community Association President Jenny Kidd says the theme, Join Us at The Junction is an invitation to a party and also symbolises what she calls “Building a 21st century community in an historic village”.
“Our community is fortunate to have the enthusiasm, talents, skills and support necessary to deliver a celebration we will all be proud of,” she said.
This event is supported by Tweed Shire Council. Tumbulgum Community is grateful for the generous support of Tweed Shire Council and local business people. For more information, contact Jenny Kidd email@example.com
